In-car activity to practice with your trainer.

Plan a lesson for a complete beginner:

  • Break this lesson down in to small bite-sized chunks
  • Deliver the lesson in a suitable practice area
  • Drive your student to the training area and deliver a demonstration of some of the main controls
  • Be prepared to fix any faults your learner makes

Your trainer will provide feedback on how you are doing after each section.

Points to consider

When planning this lesson topic, consider the following points:

  • First impressions, building rapport and teamwork
  • Suitable practice areas and time of day
  • What does the pupil want to achieve (expectations)?
  • What are their concerns?
  • Balance talking with practice (20/80)
  • Client-centred NOT generic (make it relevant to them)
  • Use of visual aids, handouts and videos
  • Effective use of questions and active listening skills
  • Clarification of words and terminology (jargon explained)
  • Dry runs & stationary practice
  • Refer to DES for correct information & advice

Suggested lesson structure (ROMPS):

  • The day before, call your pupil the day and put them at ease
  • On the day, be on time clean car & well presented
  • Eyesight / Licence checks (learning opportunity)
  • Recap on previous experience (push bike, go karts, gamer)
  • Agree goals (objectives)
  • Interactive demo drive to area (clutch, steering, controls)
  • Get to work on main points (goals) – practicing the following:
    • Enter / Exit vehicle (Dutch reach)
    • Cockpit Drill (DSSSM)
    • Main Controls (practice)
    • Starting the engine
    • Moving off (POM)
    • Stopping (MSM)
    • Safe places & Positioning (judgement, ref points & SCALP)
    • Steering (pull/push or rotational not fixed)
    • Gears (not looking down & palming)
    • Hill starts and balancing the clutch
    • Use junctions to practice moving, stopping, steering
  • Drive back home – an opportunity to consolidate learning
  • Summary / progress record / reflective log
  • Book the next lesson?
  • Learning agreement signed
  • Payment plan
